Handmade Fall Wardrobe: Tops

Today I’m talking about TOPS!

Alida Makes: Zippy Top Tee

This Mac and Cheese top got a great response so I thought I’d explain a little bit about it. I refashioned it from an adult tee from Sandbox Threads. Not only is this a ridiculously cool tee shirt shop but the owner lives 5 houses down from me! Pretty cool huh?

I used the Little Zippy pattern from See Kate Sew, but since it’s a knit shirt I cut it one size smaller than I normally would. I omitted the facings and zipper and finished the neckline and the arm holes by turning them under 1/2″ and stitched with a double needle.

This polkadot top is also a Little Zippy. I decided a bow would be pretty on it so I hand stitched it on. I used a yellow zipper to give it a little pop!

The tiger shirt is also a Little Zippy. Once I started making little zippies I just couldn’t stop! The fabric is Cotton + Steel Alexia Abegg Hatbox Tiger Stripes Orange. You can find it HERE.

I am probably going to make a Zippy Top out of the orange tiger fabric for myself. Is that weird?Flashback Skinny Tee: Alida Makes
And this beauty is the Flashback Skinny Tee. It’s amazing what sweater fabric does to this pattern! I omitted the sleeve cuffs to keep it looking sleek. It’s such a fun little sweater, but the fabric was a PAIN IN THE ASS to sew. It’s really thin and stretchy. And I bought a ton of it. WOMP WOMP. I cannot wait to buy some thicker, more substantial sweater fabric and use this pattern again! It’s such a quick sew. I think it took me about an hour and that’s counting the time I used putting water soluble interfacing on every single seam so it didn’t stretch out!

Tomorrow….CARDIGANS!

Don’t forget! I’m giving away seven patterns plus a $100 Gift Card fromImagine Gnats! Enter below!

  1. I’m obsessed with the Little Zippy style top. It’s modest and looks like the cut will fit for a good while! Great idea to see for Care, so Ellie can reap the benefits, too! If I won, I would finally sit down with my machine and get back to work, doing something I love!

    1. I forgot to say what I would make first. I guess it depends on my mood. I want to make the little jacket but the long sleeve tee would be much more useful to Emily since she does not like to layer.

  2. host wide leg pants.
We have a lot of T-Shirts, but about 3 pants.
and my daughter only wants to wear 1 of them.

    Love the mac & cheese t-shirt 😉
    so cute!

  3. I love that flashback skinny tee. I always buy knit, but have yet to sew with it…just seem to be intimidated. Maybe this is a good first 🙂

  4. Oooooo . . . I would buy a pile of chambray from Rachel’s shop and would get cracking on an O&S Sailboat Top in dress for for my 2 year old, a skirt of some sort for my 4 finicky year old and a new Liesl & Co Cinema Dress for me!
And that tiger top is darn awesome.

  5. The little zippy looks like a fun sew! It’s especially cute in the tigers. It rivals store bought (in that we-sew-so-it’s-supposed-to-be-a-compliment kind of way)! 🙂

  6. I would totally use the meridian pattern to make my mom a cardigan for her birthday in October. Also, I am intrigued by the little zippy…..I must check it out!

I love feedback! What did you think of this article?
