Oyster Knife Carrying Case Tutorial

Valentine’s day is coming up! If you need a manly and easy handmade gift idea for your husband, I think this fits the bill:
Y’all, I don’t know if I’ve shared this with you before, but my husband is an oyster fanatic.
For this birthday this year, he asked his parents for these beautiful oyster knives from Carolina Shuckers. And then, he hinted to me that he’d need a carrying case for them…wink wink. It’s so hard to find good ideas for handmade gifts for guys, so I was on a mission to come up with something that was not only easy but very manly.
Wouldn’t this make a great Valentine’s Day gift?
Leather was an obvious choice for a manly gift.  Leather Hide Store was generous enough to send me this beauuuutiful buttery leather for the project. I’m in love! It’s so soft and nice to work with! Here’s how I made his gift:
1. I cut a rectangle 14″ long by 12.5″ wide of leather. (Your size may vary depending on what your leather case is for.) I folded it so the bottom edge was 2.5″ from the top.
2. I divided the leather into 4 sections and used scissors to score the leather where I wanted to sew it. I sewed down each line.
3. Then I cut a piece of leather .5″ long by 24″ wide. This will be the tie.
You can sew the tie to the back of the case where I’ve indicated above (so it doesn’t get lost!)
And there you have it!
This very simple design that can work for any number of things. Is your hubby a fisherman? You could make a leather carrying case for his filet knives and fish scaler. Is he handy? You could make a fancy leather carrying case for his tools.  The possibilities are endless!
Now, for the bit about the giveaway. Leather Hide Store is giving away a $50 gift certificate to their online store! All you have to do is “like” Leather Hide Store on Facebook (using the widget below) and you’re entered!

  1. Now if I only lived on the Gulf Coast again, this would be just perfect for my husband. But I could see how the leather pouch could be used for any type of tool set! Great idea!

  2. So awesome and manly enough for any guy! I love it. And your pictures are so great. Thanks for the chance to win, Alida! I just bought one of those scrap bags on Amazon and sadly don’t have large enough pieces to make much. 🙂

I love feedback! What did you think of this article?
