Mystery Fabric Ruffle Challenge

Today I’m revealing my project for the Mystery Fabric Ruffle Challenge hosted by See Kate Sew.

A month ago I received a package in the mail. I was delighted to see it was from Fashionable Fabrics (thank you Fashionable Fabrics!!!). My mystery fabric is called “pearl bracelet” by Andover Fabrics, and the color is called persimmon.  The challenge was to make something with a ruffle using this fabric.  After much thought I decided to use this lovely vintage wool for a bag, and use the mystery fabric as a lining.

You see, in my little world, one of the most provocative things about making your own clothes and accessories is the lining.  I line everything with beautiful prints, even when I’m the only one that ever sees them.  An unexpected lining is a delicious secret just for me, just because I can, just because I want to.  (For more on my obsession with cool linings, go HERE, HERE, and HERE.)

I love the persimmon color next to the gray wool. I don’t know if you can tell, but the wool has flecks of red and orange in it. Once I finished the bag I knew I needed a matching zipper clutch to go with it.

(If you need a tutorial for a zipper pouch, there is a great one HERE.) I’m currently using it for Ellie’s Epipen.

The zipper pouch has a gorgeous lining as well, because really, why not? This lovely floral came to me via Jessica of Craftiness Is Not Optional after I participated in Vintage May. It looks a lot like my Nana’s wallpaper, which makes my heart happy.  The polkadot zipper is by Coats and Clark.

Back to the bag, I am really in love with it.  It’s HUGE which I need because I have 4 kids and always have to haul all of the junk with me!  I feel like it works for business, but it would also look super cute with boyfriend jeans and a pink girly top, slouchy cardi, chunky necklace…wait what was I saying?  ;-)

Thank you for visiting me today on the blog hop, now go check out these other great projects!

  1. I love it! I keep telling myself I’ll make myself a bag, and i haven’t (booo, i rarely get in any selfish sewing these days). Great job!

  2. very pretty! I love the way you lined the bag with the bright color! I have a bag pattern almost exactly like that… But, I’ve never put a ruffle between the bottom and top pieces :o)

  3. Love it! I literally won’t buy a bag based on the lining. I want a pretty, happy surprise when I open my njetral, black purse. If I could sew I would do the exact same thing.

And if you’re wondering why I read your blog if I don’t sew, it’s because I dream of sewing and admire your talent.

  4. I wondered if you were still planning on posting a tutorial? My sister-in-law fell in love with this bag & she has a birthday coming up soon! thanks so much – love the bag!
