Sewing The Trends Series

Hey y’all!  Today I’m a part of Sew Country Chick’s Sewing The Trends Summer 2013 Series!
Chambray is having a moment right now, and I have to admit I was slow to embrace it.  I have been embracing the maxi skirt trend, however, for a couple of years now.  I live in the South, so it’s HOT right now, and I love easy, breezy maxi skirts all Summer long.

After making the chambray version I realized that styling is very important, because it can easily go sister wivesish.  My favorite way to wear it is paired with a bright belt and a bright contrasting top.  You could also do a funky boho style.  So many possibilities!
Want to make one?  Here’s a mini-tute:
*edited to add: RST means “right sides together”
Gather the 2nd tier at the top until it meets up with the bottom of the first tier.  Sew RST.
Repeat for 3rd tier.
Fold top over 1″ and sew, insert 3/4″ elastic.
Hem bottom.

Now put on your easy, breezy skirt and smile because you can take a day off shaving your legs ;-).

  1. Thanks for participating Alida! I think I’m going to have to make myself a maxi skirt like that. I LOVE chambray! It would be great for my trip to Mexico coming up! Could you give me a guesstimate of how much yardage I should buy?

  2. Ooo, cute! It may not look so sister wifeish (funniest thing i’ve heard in awhile, btw) with a colored chambray, maybe? But then harder (for me) to style I suppose.

  3. Very interesting take on the chambray trend. This kind of skirt is a classic and so easy to make, I wonder why my closet is lacking it. Off to sew one!
Thank you so much for the tutorial

I love feedback! What did you think of this article?
