Leather Heart Elbow Patch Tutorial

Don’t you deserve to do some selfish Valentine sewing?

 Today’s Pinspiration came from ASOS.

Well, partially from ASOS and partially from Philly’s Fabric Row.  If all you’ve ever known is Joanns and Hancock Fabrics, Philly’s Fabric Row is overwhelmingly cool.  There is a store there that just sells leather.  Every color, every style, every texture of leather you’ve ever imagined, it’s there.

I bought a square foot of this gorgeous caramel-colored lamb skin for $8.  It’s buttery soft and has a teeny bit of stretch, so it’s perfect for elbow patches.  First you will need to cut two hearts out of leather/pleather/whatever.  You’ll cut two squares of interfacing just a little bit bigger than the hearts.

First you’ll put a pin where you want the middle of the heart to go, right on the tip of the elbow.

Then cut up each sleeve to about 3 inches above where your pin is.  If there is a seam cut right along it. If not, just cut a line right up the middle of the under side of the sleeve.  If there is a seam, you’ll have to trim off the part that was sewn together because it’ll get in your way when you’re ready to sew the sleeve back together.

Spray the back of the heart with adhesive but BE CAREFUL.  If you get adhesive on the front of the heart it will be a pain to get off and it will interfere with your sewing foot.   Spray with care.  Remove the elbow pin and place the middle of the heart right on top of it.

Iron the interfacing to the back of the sleeve where the heart is.  Make sure it covers the whole heart.  Sew all the way around the heart.  If you need tips for how to sew leather/pleather/vinyl you can go HERE

Trim off the excess interfacing, pin your sleeve closed and sew.  You’ll want to zig zag or serge the edges so they don’t fray.

And there you have it!  Go snuggle with your Valentine or cuddle up with a good book!

Right now I’m reading The Swiss Family Robinson, I found a 1954 edition at the Library sale for a buck.  The cover is beautiful and the pages smell sooo good.  What are you reading right now?
